Vortrag: Artificial stupidity: the myth of the computer as an intelligent agent

For many years, computer science has tried to build software ("artificial agents") which takes decisions on behalf of human beings. In this lecture, I argue that this goal is fundamentally misguided: ergonomically, because "artificial agents" create "artificial stupidity"; theoretically, because human and computer decision-making take place in different "ecological" contexts; ethically, because increased reliance on computer decision-making weakens human autonomy and self determination. I suggest that we should not see computers as "intelligent agents" but as tools, subservient to human purposes. In conclusion, I examine the consequences of this vision for system and user interface design.
